Security is a good thing – especially online. Therefore, most users online respond with doubt and reluctance if they meet a security warning when visiting a website. From http to https. Now!
Google already announced back in 2014 that websites transitioning to https would achieve a smaller SEO boost. If you have not yet transitioned to https, you should change it by October 1st, 2017. From October, Google will start warning users who visit your http site. And that's not all. You'll also be punished in relation to SEO. Google wants to create the highest possible level of security for their users. Therefore, they have tightened their SEO algorithms so that https pages are favoured in the search result. Additionally, a security warning is certainly not beneficial when speaking of your customers' confidence in you and your site. All in all, there are hard times ahead for those sites that do not transition to https before October.
But what is https?
Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure is, as you probably figured out, an encrypted version of http. The encryption consists of an SSL connection, a security technology that is used to move data securely between your web server and the visitor's web browser. Obviously, it's important that your customers' passwords, card information or ID number are not hacked through an insecure connection. Switching to https reduces the risk of this happening.
How to switch to https
If you are ready to take the step towards a more secure site, you must purchase an SSL certificate and implement it on your site. The certificate is available with different levels of security, and most often the IT department is responsible for purchasing and administering it.
- Basic level (DV = Domain validation)
- Enhanced level (OV = Organization Validation)
- Complete level (EV = Extended validation)

When the certificate is used, it will give you a brand new domain. Therefore, it's important that you make correct 301 redirects from the old http domain to the new https domain. Also, remember to review your internal links and update them to https. In addition, it's important that you make sure that Google no longer indexes your old domain as it will be perceived as duplicated content and cause a lower ranking for your new site.
Keep in mind that even though the change from http to https increases the security of your site, you are never 100 percent secured against hacking. Having said that, the benefits of the shift far exceed the disadvantages!
